The Uttarakhand Chardham Yatra is pilgrimage journey in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It involves Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath visiting four sacred shrines that are deeply revered by Hindus. These temples are situated in the Himalayan region and attract millions of devotees each year.
The Chardham Yatra includes the following destinations:
- Yamunotri:
- Location: West of Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand
- Dedicated to: Goddess Yamuna
- Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna River, and its temple is perched at an altitude of around 3,200 meters. Pilgrims perform rituals at the temple, and a dip in the hot springs nearby is considered auspicious.
- Gangotri:
- Location: Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand
- Dedicated to: Goddess Ganga
- Gangotri is the origin of the sacred Ganges River, believed to have descended to Earth from the heavens to purify the souls of mankind. The Gangotri Temple stands at about 3,100 meters and is one of the most revered spots in Hinduism.
- Kedarnath:
- Location: Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand
- Dedicated to: Lord Shiva
- Situated at an altitude of 3,583 meters, Kedarnath is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The trek to Kedarnath is considered challenging due to its high-altitude terrain.
- Badrinath:
- Location: Chamoli district, Uttarakhand
- Dedicated to: Lord Vishnu
- Badrinath Temple is situated at an altitude of 3,133 meters and is one of the most famous and visited shrines in India. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Badri (protected) form and attracts pilgrims from all over India and abroad.
Key Features of the Chardham Yatra:
- Pilgrimage Importance: The Char Dham Yatra is believed to cleanse the soul and ensure moksha (liberation). It is considered the ultimate pilgrimage for Hindus.
- Best Time to Visit: The yatra typically takes place between May and October, as the temples are closed during the harsh winter months (November to April).
- Accessibility: The Char Dham shrines are connected by road, and while the journey can be challenging, particularly for those not accustomed to high altitudes, there are also helicopter services available to some of the locations (especially to Kedarnath).
- Trekking: The yatra involves treks, notably the one to Kedarnath, which requires pilgrims to either trek or use ponies and palkis to reach the shrine.
Chardham Yatra
There are four shrines together, Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, collectively known as the Chardham, amid the tranquil heights of the Great Himalayas. These pilgrimages attract the maximum number of pilgrims each year, thus becoming the most important centres of religious pilgrimage throughout Northern India. Traditionally, the Char Dham Yatra travels from west to east, thus, the journey starts from Yamunotri, then continues to Gangotri and finally to Kedarnath and Badrinath.
Visiting Chardham Yatra temples in Uttarakhand is a unique experience as each Dham in this Hindu pilgrimage site is dedicated to a different deity and has a great significance of its own. It is believed that every Hindu should visit the Chardham in his lifetime. A pilgrimage to see God is a life- changing, bliss-flourishing, karma-alleviation contact with God. Another small circuit in Uttarakhand of four pilgrimage sites – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath is called Chota Char Dham.
